Sewer Plant

At the sewer plant I learned about what they do to help the community. At the plant they clean the water and decotaminate it, all the water in the city is moved through the plant, so anything that goes down your drains, pipes, or toilets goes to the plant and it cleans out the water, taking all the things that is sent with the water, like paper, toys, particles, etc., and sends it back through the system and is used again. So its like we recycle water and reuse it again. It's also sent through a disinfect area, where small living organisms ea the bacteria and stuff our of the water so it doesn't cause people to get sick. I never knew we had a sewer plant here in Eaton Rapids, it was fasinating to watch the sewer system in action, but it smelt terrible. And the organisms that are used for the process are multiplied daily, so the workers at the plant have to dispose of so many organisms so they don't over multiply the system.

Recycling is very important, it's a way to help our environment physically and stop from pollutants spreading across the community. What recycling does is a way to reuse things we've already used, and keep this process going over and over again so that the earth and environment gets healthier. I recycle and will keep recycling because I feel important and an asset to the earth by going green and helping our environment improve everyday.

Posting on City Talk

1) Mrs. Byerly, she works as a project manager for Eaton Rapids.
2) The city upgraded our system by putting in two parking lots as a filter because as all the rain water flows in the parking lot it goes through a rain garden where the water is filtered. All the construction that has been going on is the help make our river clearer by giving us a new sewage system.
3.) These will help our river water by not allowing chemicals and other things into our water. Like if little particles fall into the streets and end up in the water, it can get in our water system
4) Since our group was responsible for the temperature of the river I don't think it will really be effected by the new improvements in our city. Im sure that many of the other tests our classmates did will have a big effect though because there will be a lot less pollutants in the water.
5) I thought the parking lots were interesting because i assumed they were just used for parking cars, then she explained how else they were used. And I never knew that particles from cars got into our water and dirtied our water supply, which was a good thing for the parking lots.
6) Our biobottle are going well, lots of growth from each bottle. My biobottle is the one with the plastic in the system, and ist still to manage to have exponential growth.
7) Our action plan is a competition to get recycling started at McDonald's and Burger King.
8) Our powerpoint is going well, we have the good things about how Burger King and Mcdonald's recycles presently, and ways they could improve that. Also the things that they're doing that is effecting our ecosystem and community badly.

Water Testing Connection

1) My group chose about the Nitrates in McDonald's food and products.
2) Our action project will be McDonald's vs. Burger King, about what the two restaurants do to recycle see which one can start to improve sooner. The point is that my partner, Nick Yerdan, who works at Burger King, and I, who works at McDonald's, are going to work by talking to our managers to try to change our restaurants and have recycling become a regular thing at these places. The first one who can get this started will extra credit in our Global Science class.
3) In my biobottle were testing the nitrates in McDonald's products and food. In my specific biobottle, I'm using a piece of plastic from a McDonald's large drink cup and using that as my product. Over the weeks were observing the affects that it has on my biobottle ecosystem. In the end we will see what each of our chosen items, for our biobottles, have done to our ecosystem.
4) Our river test that we did at MacArthur Park connects with our action plan because of recycling. Testing the river and finding pollutants and it affects our river water. Recycling can help clean our river, and that goes for our action project. To recycle in food restaurants is a step to start recycling in our community, so all that trash that you throw away that gets in our rivers could be from the restaurant, if we start the action project, the rivers will clean up and will help our community with a great deal.

Water Treatment Plant

What I Learned:

Yesterday at the water treatment plant I learned some different things they did for our city that I never actually knew they did, and how they ran things. To create good water pressure in the city we have two water towers, and together the towers total up to a million gallons of water. The water that we use has chemicals that they add at the plant, but not bad chemicals, they use flouride for our teeth and bones because its good for it, as well as chlorine and phosphorus. Our whole town is based around water, even underground, there is a stream of pipe work under the city which carries 32 miles of water through out the city, which is used for all purposes. Now what would happen if there was a black out and no power to run the plant, how would water be carried through the cities? The answer to that is the back up generator they store inside the plant, it's used for emergency purposes in case power outages and if we have no power that we can still have the use of water.

1. Explain how water is filtered and cleaned in a city for drinking.

Reverse osmosis (RO) is a filtration method that removes many types of large molecules and ions from solutions by applying pressure to the solution when it is on one side of a selective membrane

2. Explain how sewer water is treated and returned to the river or lake.

Water is filterd by removing waste from water and turning it into solid form. Process includes procesess of physical, chemical, and biological. Waste is in solid form

3. 2 good questions to ask tomorrow.

1) What process does the water have to go through to be filtered?

2) How long does it take to filter a gallon of water?

Carbon Footprint

1. http://polutinator.blogspot.com/
2. This site could be a very useful site for people like me. But it could come out as more complex or confusing for younger kids.
3. estimated greenhouse gas emissions are 26 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) equivalent per year, which is below the U.S. national average.
4. a) I could take shorter showers and unplug appliances that I'm not using at certain times.
b) My school could recycle out old newspapers and bottles that kids and teachers throw away.
c) Sell more organic food in stores and use less polluted companies in the area.
5. Reduce pollutants will help the water shed, by preventing more acid rain and other polluted water sources.
